Millipore Pharmaceutical Plant Phase 1, Cork
Millipore Ireland BV manufactures filter membranes for the medical device industry at their 38 acre Carrigtwohill facility in Co. Cork.
The works were carried out in two phases to allow the existing production facility to remain live. The new infrastructure consisted of an 800sq.m lined reinforced concrete bund for a tank farm, with a bunding capacity of 960m3. Bunds are interlinked and drained through a network of gated process drains to facilitate maximum flexibility of the plant and to isolate accidental spillages at source.
An extensive pipe rack (950m) was installed to provide distribution routes from the existing units to the new installation. Pipe racks were installed to stringent level tolerances, to ensure fitted pipework achieved a constant fall and pipe sagging was avoided.
Solvent recovery, thermal oxidiser and cooling tower support structures were constructed and fitted out with process plant and pipework. In total 95 tons of structural steel was used in these areas.
Two new clean rooms (class 10,000) were constructed with floor areas of 800sq.m and 150sq.m and an 800sq.m plant room was constructed over the larger clean room.
