BMS Swords Laboratories-Fire Protection Upgrade
The project consisted of the construction of a new water storage tank farm and pumping equipment, site ring mains upgrade and the construction of a new underground fire water retention tank adjacent to the existing plant waste treatment facility.
The new water storage tanks have a capacity of 60,000 gallons above the normal local authority supply. The pumping plant fitted, can supply 500 gallons/minute to a network of hydrants around the facility from the storage tanks through a new 1,200m long, 300mm diameter ring main. The new retention tank has a capacity of 2,500m3 above that of the existing attenuation tanks. The works required approximately 1,000m3 of 30% GGBS reinforced concrete. The retention tank was designed to resist severe exposure conditions, this combined with stringent crack width limits required 210 tons of reinforcement for the tank base and walls alone.
The works required excavation of 5,200m3 of soil, rock and existing hardstandings. Rock materials were crushed and reused as sub-base for a new carpark over the retention tank.
