Pedestrian Bridge Access & Platform Widening at Ashtown Station, Dublin 15

This design and build scheme comprised of the construction of an 18m single span cable stayed steel pedestrian access bridge across the Royal Canal with platform extension and associated works at Ashtown Station which is on the Dublin-Longford railway line.

The bridge works consisted of micro piled foundations to rock head (average depth 25m) and in-situ reinforced concrete abutments. The steel bridge was transported in sections, assembled on site and lifted into position in one lift. The cables were tensioned afterwards with final adjustment once the steel deck was placed in position. The station platform extension works consisted of the diversion of existing services, in-situ concrete works, utilities, surface water drainage, re-configuration of access control, new railings and CCTV installation. Substantial liaison with Irish Rail staff was required during the project.

The project also included the strengthening and part re-construction of Longford Bridge which is a listed structure. Work entailed recording the positions of individual stones and existing bridge levels before dismantling the structure and setting aside the individual stones for reconstruction where possible. The contract called for close liaison with an independentconservation architect and local authorities during the works. The Longford bridge remained open to vehicular and pedestrian traffic during the works.
