Royal Canal Dredging Project
This scheme comprised the dredging of 15,000m3 of material above the canal bed over a width of 5m with varying depths along the 5km length of the canal. The project was designed on the basis of conventional dredging via excavate and cart from a floating barge. An alternative method was opted for, which consisted of using a cutter suction dredger which pumped at 30 % solids content to a fully lined treatment facility 3.5km up stream, via a 300mm diameter HDPE welded pipeline. The pumped material was discharged into geotextile dewatering tubes which filtered the dredge material, allowing the residue water to be pumped directly back into the canal. Flocculants were added to the dredge material at the treatment facility to enhance the dewatering process.
In advance of the dredging operation a thorough pre-clean operation was carried out to remove any non-inert debris within the dredge zone. This was done by combination of floating barge / long reach excavator with grab / rake attachment.
