Ballynagran Residual Landfill Phase 3, Co Wicklow

The scope of work comprised the construction of 35,000m2 of impermeable developed area over two cells capable of holding 900,000 tons of waste. The works involved bulk excavation of 235,000m3, bulk filling of 190,000m3, sub-formation and placement of a clay liner (permeability of 1 x 10-9m/s) 35,000m2 at a thickness of 1m deep, welding and placement of 35,000m2 of HDPE 2 mm thick liner with high grade protective geotextile, placement 14,000m2 of 0.5m thick leachate stone (16-32 mm grading) including welding and placement of 950m of perforated HDPE pipework including fittings, risers, etc. Five gas monitoring wells were also required including M&E works which consisted of leachate and groundwater pumping, electrical and telemetry equipment.
All earthworks materials were sourced on site with the exception of leachate stone with no disposal offsite. Substantial temporary works were required on the site, the principle ones being haul road construction, dewatering and the construction of temporary settlement lagoons in order to control solid content of water been released into existing catchments off the site.

This particular landfill won the European Green Apple Award for Environmental best practice.
