Aldi Distribution Centre, Naas, Co. Kildare
The scope of work included access roads (8,000m2), realignment of the existing R445 road and all external works complete over the entire site area i.e. goods in/out yards (20,000 sq.m), attenuation lakes (15,000 sq.m), car parks (4,000 sq.m), etc including sub-structure works on the building footprint of 38,000sq.m including pad foundations.
The gross site area was 69,000 sq.m (17 acres) and entailed a large cut and fill earthworks operation across the site. The balance of the filling was placed in landscape areas and environmental berms on the site. 20,000m3 of imported crushed rock was required for capping and sub-base under access roads, yards and building footprint. Gabion wall height ranging between 6 - 9m.
The works also included surface water drainage, construction of two fully lined surface water lagoons, utilities, diversionary works to existing streams via piped and boxed culverts, perimeter fencing, slip form kerbing, tarmacadam, machine laid paving, landscaping, underground fuel tanks, truck wash and other miscellaneous finishing works.
By careful earthworks management we reduced the quantity of soil stabilisation by selecting and re-classifying the cut materials on site. We further reduced the imported stone volumes for capping layers to the building and yard areas by using a cement stabilised capping layer in lieu of crushed rock. Overall we reduced the volume of imported stone onto site by 25%.
